Picking is similar to strumming in that there are only two ways you can move the pick, down or up. However, picking does require finer control of the hand. Choose a string and pick down. Then, immediately pick up again on the same string. Like strumming, picking upward returns you to the beginning position and you are ready to pick downward again. In some special situations you may wish to pick all down or all up, so be sure to try that out as well. More complex tunes may require the development of picking strategies that combine down and up picking in a variety of ways.
We can use tablature to indicate the direction of the pick using two symbols below the tab. As you might expect the symbol that points downward indicates picking downward and the symbol that points upward indicates picking upward.
